QUESTION:

Hi, just wondering what your thoughts are on trabectome surgery. I have glaucoma for the last 25 years and was on medical eye drop therapy all that time. Drops are not keeping pressures down where they should be. I’ve been to several doctors and most of them recommend the gold standard surgery, which I really prefer not to get due to my age and my job is very physical. So Dr recommend trabectome. I am in the East coast and Canaloplasty hasn’t been done a lot, which I’m not sure if I qualify anyway. I just wanted your thoughts. Thank you.

ANSWER:

Thank you for reminding me that I have yet to create a post on Trabectome. Part of the reason I’ve not yet done so is that I find it to be an underwhelming procedure and given my limited available time I tend to write about what excites me. Not that long ago I presented my thoughts about Trabectome to a room full of optometrists. You can view the video of this presentation here:

Cyclophotocoagulation and Trabectome for Glaucoma

The topic of Trabectome begins at 3:35.

Hope this was helpful to you.
