QUESTION:
Good day, I’m emailing you in regards of my mother. She’s 86 years old, and she doesn’t want any one to put in her eye drops, but it seems as if she’s loosing her eye sight rapidly now. I was wondering if there is anything oral that she can take to restore back her eye sight. If so, I need to know ASAP. She gets her regular checks ups twice a year. I hope you can help me out.

ANSWER:
I’m afraid there are no glaucoma treatments that are capable of restoring sight. The best we are currently available to do is delay loss of vision by lowering the eye pressure. There are pills (carbonic anhydrase inhibitors) that can lower the pressure but they must be prescribed carefully as there are potential side effects. Whether that would be an appropriate treatment for your mother would best be discussed with her local ophthalmologist.
