Is there anyway to cure stye?

August 1, 2016

QUESTION:

I was wondering is there anyway to cure stye, because I have one under my right eye. Do I really need surgery to take care of it or is there some kind of eye drop or medication I can take? I really do wish it can be cure with just medication and/or eyedrops.

via Email

ANSWER:

The treatment of a stye depends upon the clinical appearance of the stye under the clinical microscope (slit lamp). This requires an in-office exam. Not all styes require surgery. Some, however, do require prescription antibiotics.

I’ve copied one of my staff, Nancy, who will contact you to schedule an in-office consultation with me. Once I’ve seen the stye under magnification I should have the information I would need in order to provide you with the best method of treating it.

My Optic Nerve has been damaged. Is there a way to get my eyesight back?

October 12, 2016

QUESTION:

I am from Sri Lanka. I met an accident recently and my left eyesight went blind. Here in Sri Lanka, doctors informed me that my optic nerve got damaged and unable to do anything else. I shall be grateful if you kindly advise me to get my eyesight back.

via Email

ANSWER:

I am very sorry to hear about your accident and the damage it has caused. Unfortunately, there are no proven treatments for traumatic optic nerve damage. Lots of promising work being done in the lab but nothing yet for humans.

Sorry I could not be of more assistance.

How do you correct glaring vision when you have glaucoma?

June 11, 2017

QUESTION:

How do you correct glaring vision when you have glaucoma?

via Email

ANSWER:

The most common form of glaucoma, open angle glaucoma, is not associated with glare. On the other hand, angle closure can result in glare but only in the setting of severe intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation. Symptoms of angle closure which would warrant immediate (emergent) evaluation and treatment include such things as sudden loss of vision, new onset glare or halos or rainbows around lights, red eye, eye ache, headache, brow ache, nausea, vomiting.

There are many eye conditions that can cause glare. Which one is the cause of glare for an individual can only be determined with an in-office consultation under the exam microscope. Based on the area code of the phone number you provided it appears that you are in New Jersey. Although I would be happy to provide a consultation if you happen to be in Southern California, there is an exceptionally skilled surgeon in New Jersey that you might wish to see: Dr. Steven Safran.
